Jeff's Why

When it became necessary to reinvent our lives after my wife Marci passed from leiomyosarcoma I knew I had to find:

1. Something positive to do with my life.
2. Something interesting and enjoyable to do.
3. Someway to be charitable and give back in Marci's memory and honor.

To that end, the Marci Bikshorn Sarcoma Research Fund was established.

I have always been involved with real estate as an investor and taking that to the next level checked all those boxes. In mid-2019, I meet with Dr. Van Tine and understood the need for continued research, and recognized how Real Estate sales could be used as a vehicle to generate funds to help finance this needed research. In January of 2020, I received my Real Estate license and Uptown STL was created. The "Mission" was to generate Real Estate sales and donate a minimum of 50% of these sales commissions to St. Louis-based organizations in search of a cure for cancer. Uptown STL found a partner broker in Coldwell Banker Realty - Gundaker which is the number one and largest real estate firm in St. Louis to carry out this mission. The thought was if mildly successful we can generate sufficient contributions to fund research to help find a cure, a real win-win!

In 2020, and our 1st year in business we were able to donate through friends, donations, and commissions over $18K to the STL Cure Sarcoma Walk/Run. Those funds were directly donated to Dr. Van Tine's research and the National Sarcoma Foundation,

In 2021, we created the " Marci Bikshorn Sarcoma Research Fund " with Washington University and Siteman Cancer Center and committed $50,000 to the fund for progressive ongoing research under Dr. Van Tines's direction to find a cure.

Meet the Researcher

Brian Andrew Van Tine, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri. He is the Sarcoma Program Director, Co-Director of the Phase 2 Program at Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center and Co-Director of the Adolescence and Young Adult Program at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center. Dr. Van Tine received his Bachelors of Science degree from the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Arizona in 1995. Dr. Van Tine completed his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005. His thesis research mainly focused on the role of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in the development of cervical cancer with Profs. Louis T. Chow and Thomas R. Broker. After completing his M.D., Ph.D., Dr. Van Tine came to Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes Jewish Hospital where he did his Internal Medicine Residency and Medical Oncology Fellowship. He joined the laboratories of James J.D. Hsieh, M.D., Ph.D. and then Matthew Ellis, M.B., B.Chir., Ph.D., where he pursued his postdoctoral fellowship studying mouse genetics and genomics while clinically specializing in the treatment of sarcoma.

Dr. Van Tine is the proud beneficiary of proceeds from the Marci Bikshorn Sarcoma Research Fund and the STL Cure Sarcoma 6K Run/Walk which both support his critical sarcoma research.
